Cairns is a fantastic city to explore by automobile. It is the largest city in the Far North Queensland area and the heart of Australia's most tropical region. The scenery is breathtaking, with several distinctive attractions, and the seacoast is much more dramatic and spectacular than in the rest of Australia. The distances are very considerable, so renting a car is your best choice for seeing as much as possible.
Interesting facts about the city
Cairns has a tropical monsoon climate with two seasons: wet from November to May and dry from June to October. Cairns is Australia's most humid major metropolis. The average temperature is 28°C (82°F) from December to February, when it is the warmest, and 212°C (71°F) in July, when it is the coolest.
Cairns was historically inhabited by the Gimuy Walubara Yidinji people, who still reside in and around the city to this day. Native Australians make up 8.9 percent of the population, which is substantially higher than the national average.
Cairns is the sixth most populous city in Queensland, with a population of about 145,000 people. Cairns is a distant resort located roughly 1,700km (1,056 miles) from the state capital, Brisbane, and around 2,500km (1,553 miles) from Australia's capital, Canberra. As a result, the closest capital city to Cairns is Port Moresby in Papua New Guinea, not Canberra.
Ideas for a day trip
Kuranda is a well-known recreational attraction, located in the surrounding highlands and surrounded by beautiful vegetation. There are several hiking paths, and you can also park your rental vehicle in town and take a ride on the skyrail, which takes you directly into the rainforest with numerous interesting stops along the way. Kuranda is about 27 kilometers (17 miles) northwest of Cairns and can be reached in half an hour.
The Daintree National Park is located in Queensland, Australia. If Kuranda didn't whet your appetite for rainforest, Daintree is where it becomes thick and spectacular. The area is dominated by mangroves and palms, and distinctive Australian species such as amethystine the python, platypus, and musky-rat kangaroo are all native to the forest. There are several trekking options, but it is best to hire a guide or at the very least conduct some study and plan a route ahead of time because some of the animal species may be extremely dangerous.
Mission Beach. While Queensland has no lack of beautiful beaches, Mission Beach may be the best. It is tropical and unspoiled, with a more laidback attitude than beaches in Cairns or Brisbane. During your tour, see if you can locate the uncommon and distinctive cassowary bird. You can also easily reach the lovely Dunk and Bedarra Islands from here. Mission Beach is around 140 kilometers (87 miles) south of Cairns and can be reached in two hours by vehicle.
Chillagoe-Mungana National Park is a one-of-a-kind protected region that allows visitors to see continental Australia without having to travel for days. The area is markedly different from the coastal areas and has a more primitive feel, with limestone caverns decorated with Indigenous Australian art and spectacular rock formations.
