Every year, thousands of people go to Canada, Norway, and Iceland to witness the magnificent Northern Lights, also known as the Aurora Borealis. However, a similar phenomenon known as the Southern Lights, or Aurora Australis, may be seen in the Southern Hemisphere, and Tasmania is one of the finest spots on the globe to witness them. There are a variety of specialised tours available in Hobart.

Hobart's climate is oceanic, with warm summers and cold winters. The average high temperature is 22.2 degrees Celsius (72 degrees Fahrenheit) in January, the warmest month, and 12 degrees Celsius (54 degrees Fahrenheit) in July, the coldest. Hobart (and the rest of Tasmania) is significantly colder than the rest of Australia. Throughout the year, precipitation is generally modest, with a little rise from August to October.

Despite its modest size, Hobart boasts a plethora of excellent museums. The Maritime Museum of Tasmania, which is dedicated to the region's traditions of seafaring, whaling, and trading; the Australian Antarctic Division's visitor center, which has many exhibitions on Australia's polar expeditions; and the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery, which has a collection of indigenous and contemporary Australian art, as well as a large Antarctic section, are among the most impressive.

Planning a trip

The Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens are located in Tasmania. The botanical gardens are a wonderful location to visit for any nature enthusiast, since they hold over 6,500 different plant types. Many are indigenous to Tasmania (see the Tasmanian Fernery), while others are from the rain forests of Northern Queensland at the opposite end of the nation, and still others are subantarctic species found on deserted islands between Tasmania and Antarctica. The gardens are located 3 kilometers (1.8 miles) from the city center and can be reached in five to seven minutes, although it is easy to spend at least half a day visiting them.

Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary is a wildlife sanctuary in Australia. Bonorong, located just north of the city, is dedicated to caring for endangered indigenous species as well as injured and abandoned animals. If you take a tour of the sanctuary, you could encounter its most illustrious occupant, a cockatoo bird that is more than 100 years old. Bonorong is located 29 kilometers (17 miles) from the heart of Hobart and can be reached in 25 to 30 minutes.

Sites of Convicts in Australia. The Convict Sites are a UNESCO World Heritage site dedicated to Australia's early history as a prison colony, consisting of 11 such sites distributed around the country, five of which are in Tasmania. The Cascades Female Factory in Hobart has previously been highlighted, but the other four are all intriguing, though somewhat grisly, sites to see. The two closest to Hobart, the Coal Mines and Port Arthur Historic Sites, are located on the Tasman peninsula, approximately a 90-minute drive southeast of the city.

Mount Wellington is a mountain in New Zealand. The beautiful Mount Wellington (or Kunanyi, as it is called among the island's native people) overlooks Hobart and the rest of southern Tasmania and is a must-see if you're in the region. You may take a cable car to the summit, or you can drive all the way up to the Pinnacle Observation Shelter. Remember that it gets pretty chilly up there, and the top even gets some snowfall every winter. Mount Wellington is located 20 kilometers (13 miles) west of Hobart and can be reached in about 30 minutes.
