Sao Paulo is a municipality in Brazil's Southwest Region. The city also has many of Brazil's highest skyscrapers, including the Mirante do Vale, Edifcio Itália, Banespa, North Tower, and many others. The city has national and international cultural, economic, and political clout. It is home to several monuments, parks, and museums, including the Latin American Memorial, Ibirapuera Park, the Museum of Ipiranga, the Sao Paulo Museum of Art, and the Museum of the Portuguese Language. Sao Paulo hosts events such as the Sao Paulo Jazz Festival, the Brazilian Grand Prix, Sao Paulo Fashion Week, the ATP Brasil Open, the Brasil Game Show, and the Comic Con Experience. Sao Paulo's LGBTQ Pride parade is the world's largest LGBTQ pride parade, rivaling New York City's Pride march.

Sao Paulo is a cosmopolitan, melting pot city that is home to the largest Arab, Italian, Japanese, and Portuguese diasporas, with ethnic districts such as Mercado, Bixiga, and Liberdade as examples. Sao Paulo also has the biggest Jewish population in Brazil, with around 75,000 Jews. In 2016, the city's residents were from over 200 different nations. Paulistanos are people from the city, whereas paulistas are people from the state, including paulistanos. Non ducor, duco is the city's Latin motto, which it shares with the battleship and aircraft carrier named after it. It translates as "I am not led, I lead." The city, often known informally as Sampa or Terra da Garoa (Land of Drizzle), is noted for its unpredictable weather, large helicopter fleet, architecture, gastronomy, severe traffic congestion, and skyscrapers. Sao Paulo was a host city for both the 1950 and 2014 FIFA World Cups. The city also held the IV Pan American Games and the Sao Paulo Indy 300.
