Thunder Bay is a city in and the administrative center of the Thunder Bay District in Ontario, Canada. It is the most populated municipality in Northwestern Ontario and the second most populous municipality in Northern Ontario (after Greater Sudbury); according to the 2016 Canada Census, its population is 107,909 people. Thunder Bay, located on Lake Superior, has a population of 121,621 people and is made up of the city of Thunder Bay, the municipalities of Oliver Paipoonge and Neebing, the townships of Shuniah, Conmee, O'Connor, and Gillies, and the Fort William First Nation.
The region's European colonization began in the late 17th century with the establishment of a French fur trade outpost on the banks of the Kaministiquia River. It evolved into a significant transportation center, with its port serving as a vital connection in the transfer of grain and other products from western Canada to the east coast through the Great Lakes and the Saint Lawrence Seaway. Forestry and industry were significant contributors to the city's economy. They have fallen in recent years, but have been replaced by a "knowledge economy" focused on medical research and education. The Thunder Bay Regional Health Research Institute is located in Thunder Bay.
The city gets its name from the massive Thunder Bay at the head of Lake Superior, which was known as Baie du Tonnerre on 18th-century French maps (Bay of Thunder). Because of its location near the terminus of Great Lakes navigation on the Canadian side of the border, the city is commonly referred to as the "Lakehead" or "Canadian Lakehead."
