Iquique is the capital of both the Iquique Province and the Tarapacá Region in northern Chile. It is located on the Pacific coast, west of the Atacama Desert's Pampa del Tamarugal. According to the 2017 census, it has a population of 191,468 people. It is also the largest commune in the province of Greater Iquique. During the height of saltpetre mining in the Atacama Desert in the nineteenth century, the city grew. It was once a Peruvian city with a substantial Chilean population before being invaded by Chile during the Pacific War (1879–1883). It is now one of Chile's only two free ports, the other being Punta Arenas in the country's extreme south.
