Puerto Natales is a city in Patagonia, Chile. It serves as the seat of both the commune of Natales and the province of ltima Esperanza, one of the four provinces that comprise the Magallanes and Antartica Chilena Region in Chile's south. The province's only city is Puerto Natales. It lies 247 kilometers northwest of Punta Arenas. It serves as the penultimate passenger port of call for the Navimag ferry sailing from Puerto Montt into the Seoret Channel, as well as the major transit point for visitors to Chile's Torres del Paine National Park.
It was previously inhabited by the Kawésqar or Alacaluf people and the Aoniken or Tehuelche people and is located near the entry of ltima Esperanza Sound. In 1557, Juan Ladrillero, a Spanish explorer seeking for the Strait of Magellan's western entrance, was the first European to discover the region where the city is located.
Later, European immigrants, especially Germans, British (including English, Welsh, and Scots), Croats, Greeks, Italians, and Spaniards, settled in the city. It was later populated by Chileans, many of whom came from the island of Chiloé, all drawn by the sheep raising business.
On May 31, 1911, the city was legally established under the administration of Ramón Barros Luco. Tourism is now one of its most important businesses, while the cattle and aquaculture industries are still vital.
