Corsica is an island in the Mediterranean Sea and one of France's eighteen regions. It is the fourth-largest island in the Mediterranean, located southeast of the French mainland, west of the Italian Peninsula, and directly north of the Italian island of Sardinia, which is the closest land mass to it. Two-thirds of the island is covered by a single mountain range. It has a population of 330,455 people in 2016.

The island is a French territorial collectivity. Ajaccio is the regional capital. Despite the fact that the territory is separated into two administrative departments, Haute-Corse and Corse-du-Sud, their individual regional and departmental territorial collectivities were combined on January 1, 2018 to become the one territorial collectivity of Corsica. As a result, Corsica has more autonomy than other French provincial collectivities; for example, the Corsican Assembly has limited executive powers. Bastia, the prefecture of Haute-Corse, is Corsica's second-largest town.

Corsica was controlled by the Republic of Genoa from 1284 until 1755, when it declared itself an Italian-speaking republic. Genoa formally surrendered it to Louis XV of France in 1768 as part of a guarantee for debts acquired by soliciting France's military assistance in crushing the Corsican insurrection; France annexed it in 1769. Napoleon Bonaparte was a native Corsican who was born in Ajaccio the same year. Maison Bonaparte, his ancestral house, is now a tourist attraction and museum. Corsica has preserved many Italian cultural features as a result of its historical links to Italy, particularly Tuscany, and many Corsican surnames are based in the Italian peninsula. The native language, Corsican, is recognized as a regional language by the French government.
