The ancient village of Chersonesos, which served the city of Lyttos from Classical Greece to Byzantine times, is located near the contemporary community of Hersonissos. The modern pleasure port was built on top of the ruins of the Roman harbour. Select evidence of those ruins, the most of which are underwater, can still be seen in some locations. A pyramidal Roman fountain with mosaics of fishing motifs stands on the beach street. The ruins of an early Christian church with floor mosaics can be found on top of the rocky slope behind the harbor.
Prehistoric archaeological findings have been discovered in the Hersonissos area. An ancient temple dedicated to the goddess Britomartis stood on the seaside about one kilometer east of Hersonissos.
