Drumcondra is a residential neighbourhood and inner suburb on Dublin's northern outskirts. Dublin City Council is in charge of its administration. The Royal Canal and the River Tolka run through the neighborhood.
Croke Park, where Ireland's national games of Gaelic football and hurling are played, is one of Dublin's most famous sights. It is one of Europe's largest sports stadiums, with a capacity of 82,300 people. Croker (as it is affectionately known) is the Gaelic Athletic Association's headquarters, as well as the official GAA Museum (on St Josephs Avenue, which is off Clonliffe Road). The All-Ireland Senior Football Championship and All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship finals are held at the stadium. The stadium is a 20-minute walk or a 5-minute bus ride from Dublin city center.
Bertie Ahern took US President Bill Clinton to Fagan's Public House on Drumcondra Road Lower in September 1998. Kennedys Pub on Lower Drumcondra Road is one of Drumcondra's oldest pubs, having opened several years before Fagans. Since 1961, it has been known as Kennedys, having previously been known as McPhillips.
On Richmond Road is Tolka Park, the home of League of Ireland team Shelbourne. Near the Church of St. George cemetery is the National Council for the Blind, which is located on Whitworth Road.
Drumcondra Castle, originally the site of an Elizabethan castle erected around 1560 by Meath man James Bathe on ecclesiastical land (belonging to the Priory of the Holy Trinity), the castle was built on ecclesiastical land (belonging to the Priory of the Holy Trinity) granted to him. The Bathe family owned it for many years. Sir William Warren, who had married the widow of John Bathe and therefore acquired the properties in Drumcondra for his lifetime, lived in the Castle in 1591. Hugh O'Neill, Earl of Tyrone, married Mabel Bagenal, his third wife, here after eloping with her.
James II granted the Drumcondra property to a Giles Martin in 1677, and Captain Chichester Philips purchased it in 1703. When the Carmelites purchased the property of Drumcondra Castle in 1870, it became St. Joseph's Asylum for the Male Blind. In 1955, the Archbishop of Dublin appointed the Rosminians to run services for the blind in St. Joseph's, Drumcondra, Dublin, which became known as ChildVision in 2012. In 2014, the Rosminian order sold the lands in St. Joseph's, but took out a 25-year lease on the houses and buildings that will be used for ChildVision. On the former St. Joseph's property, the Grace Park Woods housing development is being created.
Drumcondra House is a house in Drumcondra, Ireland. Rev. John Hand bought Drumcondra House, and All Hallows College was founded in 1842. Daniel O'Connell was involved in the purchase of Drumcondra House from Dublin Corporation for All Hallows. Built in 1726 for Sir Marmaduke Coghill from the adjoining Belvedere House, it was designed by architect Sir Edward Lovett Pearce. For a while, the Cogills rented out the house. The Vincentian Order sold All Hallows to Dublin City University in 2016.
