Car rental with economy
Kaunas, Lithuania's second-largest city after Vilnius, is an important center of the country's economic, intellectual, and cultural life. Since 1413, Kaunas has been the largest city and county seat of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania's Duchy of Trakai and Trakai Palatinate. From 1843 to 1915, it was the capital of the Kaunas Governorate in the Russian Empire.
During the interwar era, when Vilnius was occupied by Poland from 1920 until 1939, it served as the interim capital of Lithuania. During that time, Kaunas was known for its vibrant cultural and academic life, fashion, and the construction of several Art Deco and Lithuanian National Romanticism architectural-style buildings, as well as popular furniture, interior design, and a thriving café culture. The city's interwar architecture is considered one of the greatest examples of European Art Deco and has been designated as a European Heritage Site. It helped Kaunas become the first city in Central and Eastern Europe to be awarded a UNESCO City of Design. Kaunas, together with Esch-sur-Alzette, Luxembourg, has been named the European Capital of Culture for 2022.
The city serves as the seat of the Kaunas City Municipality and the Kaunas District Municipality, as well as the capital of Kaunas County. It also serves as the headquarters of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Kaunas. Kaunas is situated at the junction of the two major Lithuanian rivers, the Nemunas and the Neris, and is close to the Kaunas Reservoir, Lithuania's largest body of water.
Highways
Kaunas is served by many main highways.
The European road E67 connects Prague in the Czech Republic to Helsinki in Finland through Poland, Kaunas, Lithuania, Riga (Latvia), and Tallinn (Estonia). It is known as the Via Baltica, and it runs 670 kilometers between Warsaw and Tallinn (416 mi). It is the most significant road link between the Baltic countries.
Kaunas is additionally connected to Vilnius to the east and Klaipda on the Baltic Sea through the A1 highway, as well as Daugavpils (Latvia) via the E262(A6) expressway.
