Parking and traffic advice

Unless otherwise specified, the speed limits on motorways or autosnelwegen are 130km/h (80 mph), expressways or autowegen are 100km/h (61 mph), other roads outside built-up regions are 80km/h (50 mph), and roads and streets inside built-up and urban areas are 50km/h (31 mph).

Parking in central Amsterdam may be quite expensive, and there are only a limited number of available places. Parking in one of the big car-parking areas or at the Park and Ride (P+R) outside the city center is a smart choice because it is considerably cheaper, generally costing less than €10 for a full day. There are also plenty of free parking spots in the Amsterdam-Noord neighborhood.

While driving in Amsterdam is absolutely feasible, and sometimes very fun, bear in mind that Dutch etiquette requires drivers to completely respect bicycles, especially if they are not using hand signals for the turns they are about to make.

The legal alcohol limit for experienced drivers is 0.05 percent, and 0.02 percent for rookie drivers and drivers under the age of 24. Excessive fines, an EU-wide license restriction, or imprisonment can result from exceeding the limit.

When driving, you must have proof of insurance and the car's registration with you.
