Madeira Airport, also known as Funchal Airport (code: FNC), is located in the municipality of Santa Cruz, east of the city. Due to the limited flat surface in close proximity to cliffs, the airport was one of the most dangerous in the world, but the expansion of the runway on concrete pillars in the sea has increased safety.
The Port of Funchal was Madeira's sole significant port. It has been entirely dedicated to passenger transit (cruise ships and ferries) as well as other tourist-related vessels and yachts since 2007. That year, all remaining fishing activity and freight commerce were relocated to Caniçal, a newly built port 12 miles to the east.
Naviera Armas operated a weekly ferry service between Funchal and Portimo on the mainland beginning in 2008, but it was stopped in 2013 owing to a dispute about port fees. It was reintroduced in summer 2018, although only as a seasonal service from July to September, run by Grupo Sousa utilizing Naviera Armas' ship Volcán de Tijarafe, which performed the passage before to its suspension in 2013. It has a maximum speed of 23 knots. The trip takes around 24 hours.
The Lobo Marinho boat connects Funchal with Porto Santo Island in two hours. As the northernmost Atlantic island in the path of the Westerlies, Funchal is regularly utilized as a stopover by transatlantic ships en route from Europe to the Caribbean.
A roadway connects Câmara de Lobos and Ribeira Brava to the west and Santa Cruz, Machico, and Caniçal to the east through Câmara de Lobos.
Tourism
Today, Funchal is a popular tourist destination, with hotels, a harbor, and an international airport, Funchal Airport (FNC), in the neighboring municipality of Santa Cruz.
Aside from Funchal, tourist sites on Madeira Island include Ribeira Brava, Curral das Freiras, Porto Moniz, Santana, the Laurisilva forest, a UNESCO Natural Site in the heart of the island, and the beaches of Porto Santo. There is also a passenger gondola lift (Funchal Cable Car) that connects the city's lower portion to the Monte suburb, as well as another that connects Monte and the Botanical Gardens.
