How to Save on Car Rental in Saint Kitts and Nevis
Saint Kitts and Nevis, formally known as the Federation of Saint Christopher and Nevis, is a West Indian island republic. It is the smallest sovereign state in the Western Hemisphere, both in terms of size and population, and is located in the Leeward Islands chain of the Lesser Antilles. The country is a Commonwealth entity, with Queen Elizabeth II serving as head of state. It is the Caribbean's sole federation.
Basseterre, the capital city, is located on the larger island of Saint Kitts. Basseterre is also the principal port for both passenger and cargo entrance (through cruise ships). The tiny island of Nevis is located about 3 kilometers southeast of Saint Kitts, across a narrow strait known as The Narrows.
Saint Kitts and Nevis Attractions
The round island of Nevis is located two miles south of Saint Kitts. Because the island is so small, the only coastal road takes only two hours to traverse. Mount Nevis is a volcanic mountain in the centre of the island, with lush rainforests extending down to the coast below. Wild donkeys wander freely, while monkeys brought over by French soldiers run about, feasting on the abundant fruit.
Saint Kitts is the bigger of the two islands that comprise the two-island country of Saint Kitts and Nevis, and is comprised of three converging volcanic peaks. Mount Liamuiga, the tallest peak, is located in the center, with beautiful vegetation going down to the beaches below. The island is round by a single road, with the stormy Atlantic Ocean to the north and the calmer Caribbean Sea to the south.
The beaches around Frigate Bay are broad swaths of glittering sand, edged with elegant beach bars and native beach bars that are particularly popular with cruise ship passengers who are coming for the day. Snorkeling tours into the island's beautiful tropical seas are available, where you may see barracuda, rare sea snails, small seahorses, and the island's favorite meal - the spiny lobster. Turtles also nest in some of the beach's more isolated sections.
The rest of the island is quieter, with tranquil towns and rural smallholdings sprinkled around the shore. Secluded coves dot the island's shore, some with unique black volcanic sand. The magnificent Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, dominates the island's southwest.
