Hammarby Sjöstad is a neighborhood in Stockholm that is now undergoing substantial urban renovation. It borders Nacka Municipality to the east and is located on both sides of Lake Hammarby Sjö. The neighborhood is located in the districts of Södermalm and Södra Hammarbyhamnen.
 
Prior to the current redevelopment, the area was known as Norra Hammarbyhamnen and Södra Hammarbyhamnen, a primarily industrial zone centered on the Lumafabriken works, a functionalist architectural piece designed by Eskil Sundahl and Arthur von Schmalensee that now houses a library and offices. The nearby Lugnet was a run-down light industrial sector that was never meant to be permanent and included an improvised trailer park. The Norra Hammarbyhamnen region on the north side of the lake was utilized as a harbour area, with a railway linking the area.
 
New plans for the majority of Södermalm In the early 1990s, Norra Hammarbyhamnen paved the way for a renovation of the entire region surrounding the lake expanse Hammarby Sjö. A broad concept was proposed, which included an expansion of the Tvärbanan light rail link from Gullmarsplan across the region.
 
Although the south and east parts of Hammarby Sjöstad are located outside of what is traditionally considered the inner-city Stockholm perimeter, the design is semi-urban rather than suburban, with boulevards, somewhat defined and architecturally varied city blocks, and commercial spaces on the ground floor of some buildings. The location, between the lake Hammarby Sjö and a canal called Sickla Kanal, has allowed for a plethora of quays and walks along the water.
 
The region also includes the Danviksklippan area from the 1940s, which has remained untouched by the continuing construction.
 
The majority of Norra Hammarbyhamnen, Tegelviksgatan, Sickla Udde, Sickla Kaj, Luma, and Sickla Kanal are in the neighborhood.
 
Hammarby Sjöstad is administratively part of the Stockholm Municipality borough of Södermalm. It was part of the former Katarina-Sofia borough, which combined with Maria-Gamla Stan borough to become Södermalm borough on January 1, 2007.
