Tower Bridge is a Grade I listed combination bascule and suspension bridge in London that was built between 1886 and 1894 and designed by Horace Jones and engineered by John Wolfe Barry. The Bridge House Estates, a charity trust formed in 1282, owns and maintains five London bridges, including the one that crosses the River Thames near the Tower of London. The bridge was built to improve access to the East End of London, which had grown its economic potential in the nineteenth century, and it was inaugurated by the Prince and Princess of Wales.
The 800-foot-long bridge is made up of two 213-foot bridge towers joined at the top level by two horizontal walkways and a central pair of bascules that may open to enable shipping. The working mechanism, which was originally hydraulically driven, was changed to an electro-hydraulic system in 1972. The bridge is part of the London Inner Ring Road, and therefore the boundary of the London congestion charge zone, and it continues to be a major traffic route, with 40,000 crossings each day. The bridge deck is open to both cars and pedestrians, and the twin towers, high-level walkways, and Victorian engine rooms are all part of the Tower Bridge Exhibition.
Tower Bridge has become a well-known icon in London. It is occasionally mistaken with London Bridge, about 0.5 mile upstream, which has given rise to a popular urban legend about an American buying the wrong bridge. Several stunt pilots, including the pioneering Francis McClean, have flown beneath the bridge.
