Honolulu is the capital and largest city of Hawaii, a U.S. state located in the Pacific Ocean. It is the westernmost and southernmost major U.S. city, as well as the unincorporated county seat of the combined City and County of Honolulu, located along the southeast coast of the island of Oahu. Honolulu is Hawaii's primary international gateway. It is also a significant international commercial, banking, hospitality, and military defense centre in both the state and Oceania. The city is distinguished by a blend of Asian, Western, and Pacific cultures, as seen by its diversified demographics, food, and customs.

In Hawaiian, Honolulu means "sheltered harbor" or "calm port," and its former name, Kou, roughly encompassed the region from Nuuanu Avenue to Alakea Street, and from Hotel Street to Queen Street, which is the core of the current downtown district. The city's historical growth and prominence in the Hawaiian archipelago and the greater Pacific area may be attributed to its appeal as a port. Honolulu has been the capital of the Hawaiian Islands since 1845, first of the autonomous Hawaiian Kingdom and then of the United States territory and state of Hawaii from 1898. Following Japan's assault on neighboring Pearl Port on December 7, 1941, which triggered the decisive entrance of the United States into World War II, the city earned international notoriety; the harbor remains a significant naval station, holding the United States Pacific Fleet, the world's biggest naval command.

Because Hawaii is the only state with no incorporated towns below the county level, the United States Census Bureau considers the approximate region known as the "City of Honolulu"—not to be confused with the "City and County"—as a census county division (CCD). As of 2019, the Honolulu CCD has a population of 390,738, while the Honolulu census-designated place (CDP) had a population of 345,064; this equates to about one-third of Hawaii's 1.4 million people. Honolulu is the most populous Oceanian city outside of Australasia and the second most populous city in Polynesia after Auckland, New Zealand.

Honolulu is a renowned global tourist destination due to its pleasant tropical temperature, rich natural beauty, and large beaches. As of May 2021, the city gets the majority of tourists to Hawaii, with between 7,000 and 11,000 people each day. This is lower than the pre-pandemic passenger arrivals of 10,000 to 15,000 per day in 2019. While Honolulu's remoteness from the rest of the United States adds to a high cost of living, it also routinely ranks high in numerous global livability rankings based on healthcare, safety, education, culture, and other factors. It scored 22nd out of 140 cities globally in the 2019 Global Liveability Index, the highest of any American city. It is also the second-safest city in the United States.
