In 1718, the city was founded as a Spanish mission and colonial outpost, and in 1731, it became the first authorized civil community in present-day Texas. San Antonio, which straddles the geographical border between South and Central Texas, anchors the southwestern corner of the Texas Triangle, an urban megaregion commonly known as the Texas Triangle. The Greater San Antonio and Greater Austin regions are roughly 80 miles (129 km) apart along Interstate 35. Both metropolitan areas are projected to merge to establish a new metroplex comparable to Dallas and Fort Worth.
San Antonio is the county seat of Bexar County, and it is the core of the San Antonio–New Braunfels metropolitan statistical region. The metropolitan area, known colloquially as Greater San Antonio, has a population of 2,550,960 according to 2019 U.S. census projections, making it the 24th-largest in the United States and the third-largest in Texas.
