Gdansk is an interesting city to visit. It was formerly a free city bordering the German Empire and is today one of Poland's most significant cities, with extremely beautiful churches and cathedrals. Gdansk's museums celebrate the city's nautical history as well as its position as a center for the Solidarity movement against the communist regime. Gdansk, located on the Baltic Coast, offers numerous gorgeous city beaches, and you can travel east or west down the coast with a rental vehicle to enjoy pristine coastlines all to yourself.

City facts that are useful
Despite its location on the Baltic Sea, Gdansk has an oceanic-continental climate. The winters are dry and fairly chilly, but the summers are pleasant and have a lot of precipitation. In July and August, the hottest months, the average temperature is 17°C (63°F), while in December it is -1°C (32°F). Snowfall is common throughout the winter, especially in January and February.
Gdansk has a population of about 460,000 people, but its metropolitan area has a population of another 600,000, making it one of the biggest cities in Poland and the sixth-largest on the Baltic Sea. Gdansk is divided into six districts, or dzielnicas, the most important of which is ródmiecie, which contains the majority of the city's attractions, cultural facilities, and restaurants.
Best vacation spots and activities
The Town Hall. The ancient town hall, one of Gdansk's most prominent structures, was erected in the 14th century. It has been damaged in city fires and during World War II, but it has always been restored and rebuilt, becoming a symbol of Gdansk citizens' endurance. The building now houses the Gdansk Museum. Visitors can also climb the tower of the town hall, which provides panoramic views of the rest of the city.
The Church of St. Mary. St. Mary's Church, one of the world's largest and most magnificent Gothic churches, can hold more than 20,000 people. A huge astronomical clock, erected in 1464 and hence older than the church itself, is part of the church complex.
The Artus Court. The Artus Court building, a magnificent example of Dutch Mannerism architecture, was formerly a meeting place for Gdansk merchants and a social gathering place for the city's nobles. The court is located on Dugi Targ Street, which is home to many of Gdansk's most magnificent structures.
The lighthouse in Nowy Port. Don't be fooled by the lighthouse's name; while it does mean "New Port" in Polish, it is really more than 125 years old. One of Gdansk's most unique structures is located in the same area and is available to tourists during the summer months; the views of the city and the sea from up top are truly breathtaking.

Gdansk, while not as huge as Warsaw or Krakow, is nevertheless a large, busy city with a lot of traffic. Every day, many individuals who do not reside in Gdansk commute to work from nearby cities and villages. On working days, the evening rush hour typically lasts from 17.00 until 20.00.
While the general quality of roads in Poland has greatly improved over the previous two decades, some rural roads, particularly in the country's northern, southern, and easternmost regions, can still be in poor condition. It is a good idea to plan your route ahead of time and research the routes you will be driving on.
When you drive, you must have proof of insurance and the car's documents with you.
You must have your passport or ID card with you at all times when driving.
