Durrs was built about the 7th century BC by Ancient Greek immigrants from Corinth and Corcyra under the name Epidamnos in collaboration with the native Illyrian Taulantii. For a short time after the Albanian Declaration of Independence, the city served as the capital of the Principality of Albania. It was then seized by the Kingdom of Italy during the interwar era and occupied by Nazi Germany during World War II. Durrs saw rapid growth in its demographic and economic activities during Albania's Communism.
Durrs' dominant economic position in Albania is based on its transportation links, concentration of economic institutions, and industrial heritage. It is supplied by the Port of Durrs, which is one of the largest on the Adriatic Sea and connects the city to other neighboring nations. Its most notable attraction is the Durrs Amphitheatre, which is on Albania's tentative list for nomination as a UNESCO World Heritage site. It was formerly the largest amphitheatre on the Balkan Peninsula, with a capacity of 20,000 people.
