On October 10, 2014, Vienna's new Central Railway Station, featuring the new BahnhofCity mall, opened. Construction of a new Central Railway Station and a new residential neighborhood to replace the existing Südbahnhof continued until 2015.
The new main station was built on the location of the previous south and east stations, as well as Südtiroler Platz. As a through station, the new main station was built. Trains arrive in the capital from all directions for the first time, bound for destinations in all directions.
Travellers and commuters benefit from direct and speedy connections, as well as the ability to change trains quickly and easily on the same platform, at the new central through station. In addition to fast transit and local rail lines, it is serviced by the underground U1, two bus routes (13A and 69A), and three tram lines (18, D and O). U1 trains arrive in brief bursts, averaging three to four minutes during the day on weekdays.
