Leuven is the capital and largest city of the Flemish Brabant province in Belgium's Flemish Region. It is approximately 25 kilometers (16 miles) east of Brussels. The historic city is part of the municipality, as are the previous neighboring municipalities of Heverlee, Kessel-Lo, a portion of Korbeek-Lo, Wilsele, and Wijgmaal. With a population of about 100,244 people, it is Belgium's ninth biggest city.

Transport
Most distances inside the city and its near environs may be completed on foot or by bicycle. Several streets are closed to automobile traffic, and within the city center, road speed restrictions set a maximum speed limit of 30 km/h (19 mph), making it a pedestrian and bicycle-friendly city. There are a couple parking lots as well.
Numerous buses, mostly run by the public transportation firm De Lijn, connect the city with the surrounding region while also providing transit choices within the city center. The city's ring road is followed by the Ringbus. The 616, 652, and 651 buses connect Leuven to Brussels Airport.
The railway station in Leuven is served by the NMBS lines 35 (Leuven–Aarschot–Hasselt), 36 (Brussels–Liège), 36N (Schaerbeek–Leuven), 53 (Schellebelle–Leuven), and 139 (Leuven–Ottignies). The start of HSL 2, the high-speed railway to Liège, is at Bierbeek, south-east of Leuven.
The European road E40 runs south of Leuven, while the European route E314 connects Leuven to the city of Aachen.
