Sights
Namur has taken on a new role as the capital of the Wallonia federal territory. Its location at the head of the Ardennes has also made it a famous tourist destination, with a casino on the left bank of the Meuse in its southern sector.
The citadel, which is now demilitarized and available to the public, is the town's most notable landmark. Namur also boasts a unique 18th-century church dedicated to Saint Aubain and a belfry designated by UNESCO as part of the World Heritage Site of the Belfries of Belgium and France.
The Couvent des Soeurs de Notre-Dame once housed Mosan art treasures by Hugo d'Oignies, which are now on display at the Musée des Arts Anciens (Rue de Fer). There is also an archeological museum and one dedicated to Félicien Rops.
The joust on stilts (going back to 1411) conducted by Namur's stiltwalkers is an unusual Namurois ritual. The most significant joust of the year is the annual Combat de l'Échasse d'Or (Fight for the Golden Stilt), held on the third Sunday in September. The Mélans and the Avresses, two teams dressed in medieval garb and standing on stilts, battle at one of the town's main squares.
Nearby attractions include Maredsous Abbey, Floreffe Abbey, and Annevoie Castle, which is surrounded by the Jardins d'Annevoie.
