Brasilia is the federal capital of Brazil and the headquarters of the Federal District's administration. The city is located in the center-western area of Brazil, at the top of the Brazilian highlands. On April 21, 1960, President Juscelino Kubitschek established it as the new national capital. Brasilia is considered to be the third-most populated city in Brazil. It has the greatest GDP per capita of any major Latin American city.

Brasilia was a planned city designed in 1956 by Lcio Costa, Oscar Niemeyer, and Joaquim Cardozo to relocate the capital from Rio de Janeiro to a more central position. Roberto Burle Marx designed the landscape. The layout of the city is divided into numbered blocks as well as sectors for certain industries, such as the Hotel Sector, the Banking Sector, and the Embassy Sector. Brasilia was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987 for its modernist architecture and distinctively creative urban planning. In October 2017, UNESCO declared it a "City of Design," and it has been a member of the Creative Cities Network since then.

The city is home to the three branches of Brazil's federal government: executive, legislative, and judicial. There are also 124 foreign embassies in Brasilia. The city's international airport, which is the third busiest in Brazil, connects it to all other major Brazilian cities as well as several foreign destinations. It was a major host city for the 2014 FIFA World Cup and held several football matches at the 2016 Summer Olympics; it also hosted the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup.

The city has a unique position in Brazil since it is an administrative division rather than a legal municipality, as are other Brazilian cities. Although Brasilia is used as a synonym for the Federal District, the Federal District is made up of 31 administrative districts, only one of which is the original planned city area, also known as Plano Piloto. IBGE considers the remainder of the Federal District to be part of Brasilia's metro region.
