Ayia Napa, also known as Agia Napa, is a tourist resort on Cyprus's southern coast, located near the far eastern extremity of the island. The name Ayia Napa is derived from a Venetian-era monastery of the same name, which is located in the town's heart, close to the plaza that is now a clubbing hub.
According to mayor Yiannis Karousos, Ayia Napa aspires to become "the greatest and most cosmopolitan tourist resort of the Mediterranean" by 2030 under new leadership. Since 2013, the resort has taken a number of steps toward realizing its goal, including improvements to public infrastructure and the hospitality industry (hotels and restaurants), the closure of problematic enterprises, and the attraction of projects such as the €220 million marina. The city's vision is supported by the Cyprus Tourism Strategy, which was completed in March 2017 and aims to make Ayia Napa "one of Europe's top three beach and nightclubbing holiday destinations, offering the best beach and marine experience in Cyprus for young adults, complemented by international standard beach clubs and nightlife." The strategy assessed Ayia Napa's present quality as 3.4/5 and suggested that its future trajectory be an improvement in quality to 4.4/5.
The resort features 27 beaches, 14 of which have been granted the Blue Flag designation, the most of any resort in Cyprus; the island itself has the second most Blue Flags in the world, trailing only Croatia. Nissi Beach won TripAdvisor's ranking of the finest beaches in Europe in 2011. Makronissos Beach was named the third greatest beach in Cyprus and Greece by Travel Weekly in 2017. In 2018, it was revealed that Nissi Beach was rated third on Instagram's list of the most popular beaches. According to a CNN article, Nissi Beach is the finest beach to visit in July 2018.
