Protaras is primarily a tourist resort in Cyprus that falls under the administrative authority of the Paralimni Municipality. The ancient city-state of Leukolla formerly stood where Protaras currently stands. The city had a tiny safe harbor where Demetrius Poliorketes took sanctuary in 306 BC while waiting for Ptolemy, one of Alexander the Great's successors. Ptolemy was beaten in the subsequent conflict and fled to Egypt, leaving Cyprus in the hands of Demetrius for a brief period. Protaras is also known as "the country of windmills," retaining a nostalgic character from the past.
Protaras is noted for its stunning sky-blue seas and sandy beaches, the most well-known of which being Fig Tree Bay. Building on the success of Ayia Napa, which is about 10 kilometers southwest, it has grown into a large contemporary vacation resort with tens of high-capacity hotels, hotel apartments, villas, restaurants, bars, and other amenities. It has a reputation for catering more to family and Cypriot tourists because it is calmer than Ayia Napa and has less of a party scene. Cape Greco is a 10-minute drive from Protaras' center.

The Blue Hole, the Chapel, Decosta Bay, and Malama Bay are all worth a visit. The most prominent diving location in Protaras for Technical Diving and Commercial Diver training is Cyclops Bay, which is located on the border with Ayia Napa.
