Pori is a city and municipality on Finland's west coast. The city sits about 10 kilometers (6 miles) from the Gulf of Bothnia, on the estuary of the Kokemäki River, 110 kilometers (68 miles) west of Tampere, 140 kilometers (87 miles) north of Turku, and 241 kilometers (150 miles) north of Helsinki, Finland's capital. Pori was founded in 1558 by Duke John, afterwards known as John III of Sweden.
The city has a population of 83,676 (as of March 31, 2021) and an area of 2,062.00 square kilometers (796.14 square miles), of which 870.01 km2 (335.91 sq mi) is water. The population density is 100.32 people per square mile (259.8 people per square mile). The municipality is entirely in Finnish. It is Finland's tenth biggest city and seventh largest urban area. Pori is the capital of the Satakunta region (population 224,028) as well as the Pori sub-region (pop. 136,905). [9] Pori was also a major city in the old Turku and Pori Province (1634–1997), together with Turku. Eurajoki, Kankaanpää, Kokemäki, Merikarvia, Nakkila, Pomarkku, Sastamala, Siikainen, and Ulvila are nearby municipalities.
Pori is well-known across Finland for its Jazz Festival, Yyteri's sandy beaches, Kirjurinluoto, Pori Aces (ssät) ice hockey team, FC Jazz football club, which won two Veikkausliiga titles in the 1990s, and Pori Theater, Finland's first Finnish-language theater. Pori is particularly well-known for its porilainen, a type of local street cuisine. Pori has burned down nine times in its history; only Oulu has burned down more frequently, up to 10 times. President P. E. Svinhufvud approved the present Pori coat of arms for usage on December 11, 1931, and it was later redesigned by Olof Eriksson. On October 27, 1959, the municipal council reaffirmed the adoption of the revised version. The coat of arms' bear pattern is based on a 17th-century seal, and the phrase, deus protector noster, or "God is our guardian," is also featured on the coat of arms of the city's founder, Duke John.
