Tampere is a city in Pirkanmaa, Finland's westernmost region. Tampere is the most populated inland city in the Nordic nations, with a population of 238,140 people in the urban area and 334,112 in the metropolitan area, also known as the Tampere sub-region, spread across 4,970 km2 (1,920 sq mi). Tampere is Finland's second-largest metropolitan area and third most populated individual municipality, behind Helsinki and Espoo, and the most populous Finnish city outside the Greater Helsinki region, which includes both Helsinki and Espoo. Tampere and its surroundings are part of the historical province of Satakunta. Tampere and its environs began to establish themselves as their own province of Pirkanmaa about the 1950s. Tampere became the heart of Pirkanmaa, and Tammermaa was used numerous times in the province's early days, for example, in the Suomi-käsikirja published in 1968. Tampere is sandwiched between the lakes Näsijärvi and Pyhäjärvi. Because the two lakes differ in elevation by 18 meters (59 feet), the Tammerkoski rapids, which connect them, have been a major power source throughout history, most recently for producing electricity. Tampere is known as the "Manchester of the North" because of its industrial background as the historic heart of Finnish manufacturing, which has given birth to its Finnish nickname "Manse" and phrases like "Manserock." Tampere has also been dubbed the "Sauna Capital of the World" since it boasts the most public saunas in the world.

Helsinki lies around 160 kilometers (100 miles) south of Tampere and can be reached in 1 hour and 31 minutes by Pendolino high-speed train service or 2 hours by automobile. The distance from Helsinki to Turku is about the same. Tampere–Pirkkala Airport is Finland's ninth busiest, with over 230,000 passengers passing through in 2017. Tampere is also a major transportation hub for three Finnish highways: Highway 3 (E12), Highway 9 (E63), and Highway 12.

Tampere Deck Arena, a planned multi-purpose sports and entertainment complex, is set to open in 2021. The arena will be the principal site for the IIHF World Championship in 2022.
