Nîmes is the prefecture of the Gard department in the southern French region of Occitanie. The commune of Nîmes, located between the Mediterranean Sea and the Cévennes, has a population of 150,610 people (2017).

Nîmes, known as the most Roman city outside of Italy, has a rich history reaching back to the Roman Empire, when it was a provincial capital and home to 50,000–60,000 people. Nîmes is home to several renowned monuments, including the Arena of Nîmes and the Maison Carrée. As a result, Nîmes is sometimes referred to as the "French Rome."

Several significant Roman Empire relics may still be found in and near Nîmes:
The elliptical Roman amphitheatre from the first or second century AD is France's best-preserved Roman arena. When its walls functioned as defenses, it was packed with medieval dwellings, but these were removed during Napoleon. It is still used for bullfighting and concerts.
The Maison Carrée (Square House), a modest Roman temple dedicated to Agrippa's sons, was constructed around 19 BC. It is one of the most well-preserved Roman temples in the world. Inside, visitors may see a brief video on the history of Nîmes.
The Jardins de la Fontaine (Gardens of the Fountain) were created around the Roman thermae remains in the 18th century.
The adjacent Pont du Gard, constructed by Agrippa as well, is a well-preserved aqueduct that once carried water across the tiny Gardon river valley.
