Car Rental with Economy
Grenoble is the prefecture and capital of the Isère department in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region in southeastern France. It is located in the ancient province of Dauphiné, at the confluence of the rivers Drac and Isère at the foot of the French Alps. The inhabitants of the city are referred to as "Grenoblois."
At the 2016 census, the commune of Grenoble had a population of 158,180, while the metropolitan area of Grenoble had a population of 687,985, making it the largest city in the Alps, ahead of Innsbruck and Bolzano. Because of its size and proximity to the mountains, the city promotes itself as the "Capital of the Alps." The rest of the metropolitan region is made up of several suburb communes, four of which have populations in excess of 20,000: Saint-Martin-d'Hères, Échirolles, Fontaine, and Voiron.
Grenoble has a history that dates back over 2,000 years, when it was a hamlet of the Allobroges Gallic tribe. In the 11th century, it became the capital of the Dauphiné. This position, reinforced by annexation to France, enabled it to grow its economy. Grenoble thereafter became a legislative and military city near the Savoy border. Grenoble's importance grew over many phases of economic prosperity over the previous three centuries as a result of industrial development. This began with a thriving glove business in the 18th and 19th centuries, progressed to the establishment of a major hydropower sector in the late 19th to early 20th centuries, and culminated in a post-World War II economic boom highlighted by the staging of the X Olympic Winter Games in 1968.
With one in every five residents working directly in these sectors, the city has evolved to be one of Europe's most major research, technology, and innovation hubs. The Globalization and World Cities Research Network classifies Grenoble as a global city with a "sufficiency" level. In 2022, the city will be named European Green Capital.
