Chambéry is the Savoie department's prefecture in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region in southeastern France. In 2017, the commune had a population of 58,919 people, and the urban area had a population of 190,279 people.
It is the department's capital and the historical capital of the Savoy area since Amadeus V, Count of Savoy, made the city his seat of power in the 13th century. Chambéry is a member of the Alpine Town of the Year Association, which works to implement the Alpine Convention and promote sustainable development in the Alpine Arc. In 2006, Chambéry was named Alpine Town of the Year.
According to the Köppen climatic classification system, Chambéry is located on the border between a mid-latitude, four-season humid subtropical climate (Cfa) and an oceanic climate (Cfb). Despite this, its central location within France, near multiple mountain ranges, has a strong influence on its climate, resulting in scorching summers and cold winters with regular temperatures below freezing, especially at night. For much of the year, convective rainfall is common, resulting in high precipitation/day quotas.
Château de Chambéry
In 1285, the first counts of Savoy moved into an existing fortification, which was further enlarged in the early 14th century to serve as a palace, seat of authority and administration, and bastion for the House of Savoy. However, as a substantial fortification capable of withstanding a siege, it swiftly became obsolete. Duke Emmanuel Philibert opted to relocate his capital to Turin due to persistent French hostilities on the château.
Until Christine Marie of France, Duchess of Savoy, returned to hold court in 1640, the château remained simply an administrative center. It was here that Victor Amadeus II of Sardinia married Anne Marie d'Orléans, Louis XIV's niece, in 1684. After abdicating the throne, Victor Amadeus II and his second wife Anna Canalis di Cumiana lived here until they were imprisoned at the Castle of Rivoli for attempting to recover the monarchy.
Victor Amadeus III expanded it in 1786, adding a Royal Wing.
The Aile du Midi ("South Wing") was restored and redecorated by Napoleon Bonaparte to house the imperial prefecture of the department of Mont-Blanc. Following France's annexation of Savoy in 1860, extensive structural changes were implemented.
The castle now houses the political office of the department of Savoie, and it is open to the public for tours and performances.
