Bergen is a town in Lower Saxony, Germany, located north of the Celle region on the Lüneburg Heath. Administratively, it is split into 12 subordinate parishes based on the town and its neighboring villages: Becklingen, Belsen, Bergen, Bleckmar, Diesten, Dohnsen, Eversen, Hagen, Hassel, Offen, Sülze, and Wardböhmen. The Bergen-Belsen concentration camp was located in the Belsen area.
Attractions
The Römstedthaus is a farm museum that focuses on local and regional history. It focuses on farmer life and labor up until the turn of the century in 1900. It is housed in a 350-year-old smokehouse that is still standing on the same site where it was erected. The ancient farmhouse and church dwelling were recorded for the first time in 1438. The well-known Sieben Steinhäuser, a collection of five megalithic tombs from the late Funnelbeaker culture (3500-2800 B.C.) that are now a cultural monument, are located in the center of the military training area to the west of Bergen.
Memorials
Three memorials may be seen in the town center, on the Friedensplatz ("Peace Square"), just adjacent to St. Lambert's Church:
A memorial to the fallen of the First World War (1914–1918) and the Second World War (1939–1945). It was dedicated on April 30, 1922.
In remembrance of the dead of the Franco-Prussian War (1870–1871), a sandstone monument with a white marble plaque was erected. On June 22, 1878, it was inaugurated. The inscription on the marble plaque reads, "In remembrance of the heroes from the parish of Bergen who fell in the years 1870 and 1871."
A peace monument with a colorful past. It was initially built for the peace ceremonies commemorating the end of French sovereignty. The forces of Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte were defeated in the Battle of Leipzig in October 1813, and the First Treaty of Paris was signed (30 May 1814). On July 24, 1814, all the churches in the country celebrated a peace festival by command of the prince-regent (Britain's George IV).
