Hamburg is a fantastic city to explore by automobile. Although its historic core is magnificent, Germany's second-largest city is big and expansive, with fascinating landmarks dispersed across its numerous neighborhoods and suburbs. Once you've visited the city, Hamburg may be a wonderful starting point for seeing the remainder of North Germany.

City facts that are useful
Hamburg enjoys a moderate maritime climate due to its closeness to the North Sea. The average temperature in July and August, the hottest months, is 17°C (63°F), and 1°C (34°F) in January. Precipitation is fairly equal throughout the year, with August being the wettest and April being the driest.
Hamburg is not just Germany's second-largest city, but it is also one of the 16 federal German states, preserving part of its former status (it was once a free imperial city of the Holy Roman Empire). Lower Saxony and Schleswig-Holstein border Hamburg, and parts of its suburbs are in those states. The city is split into seven boroughs.
Despite being a big port city, Hamburg is not located on the coast. It is instead located on the Elbe, which connects it to the neighboring North Sea. By far Germany's biggest container port, it is also Europe's second busiest (behind only Antwerp in Belgium) and one of the world's top 20.
Best vacation spots and activities
The Church of St. Michael. Hauptkirche St. Michaelis is Hamburg's lone baroque church, making it a bit of an oddity. Nonetheless, it is one of the city's most magnificent structures. The first church was constructed in the mid-seventeenth century and was subsequently destroyed by lightning. Its replacement has stood safely in its place for more than 200 years. The cathedral is famed for the monument outside that depicts Archangel Michael defeating the devil, but it also has an outstanding tower, a city emblem so well-known that many local Hamburgers have tattoos of it.
Rathaus. It's not often that the city hall is one of the most significant or intriguing sites in town, but Hamburg's is certainly an exception. Although it is not very ancient (it was erected in 1897), the neo-Renaissance Rathaus is immediately identifiable as one of Germany's most magnificent structures. The city hall's magnificent rooms and tower are available to tourists while still serving a municipal role.
The Elbe Tunnel at St. Pauli. The magnificent tunnel, which connects both banks of the Elbe, is 24m (78ft) below and 427m (1,400ft) long. Though you can stroll through it, it's far more fun to drive through it in a rental automobile, which is available for a nominal charge. The tunnel is adorned with intriguing marine and seafaring themes that pay respect to Hamburg's primary industry. Although passing through the tunnel might seem a little claustrophobic, it is one of the Hamburg experiences that every tourist should do at least once.
