Heidelberg is a university town in Baden-Württemberg, Germany, located on the Neckar River in south-west Germany. Heidelberg is the fifth-largest city in Baden-Württemberg, located about 78 kilometers south of Frankfurt. Heidelberg is part of the Rhine-Neckar Metropolitan Region, which is highly populated.

Cityscape

The "ancient town" on the Neckar's south bank is long and narrow. The remains of Heidelberg Castle, located 80 meters above the Neckar on the high forested slopes of the Königstuhl (King's chair or throne) hill, dominate the landscape.

The Main Thoroughfare (Hauptstrasse), a mile-long pedestrian street that runs the length of the historic district.

The ancient stone bridge was built between 1786 and 1788. A medieval bridge gate, which was once part of the town wall, can be seen on the side of the old town. Baroque tower helmets were installed as part of the stone bridge's construction in 1788.

The Karls‘ gate, located on Heidelberg's east side, is a triumphal arch named for Prince Elector Karl Theodor. Nicolas de Pigage designed it and it was erected between 1775 and 1781.

The mansion of Knight St. George is one of the few structures that have survived the War of Succession. It was erected in the late Renaissance style and is across from the Church of the Holy Spirit. It gets its name from the sculpture at the summit.

The Stables, a 16th-century Neckar structure that has performed many functions throughout its history. It is currently a university cafeteria.

The Heidelberg Castle is a fusion of Gothic and Renaissance architecture. The first building in the inner courtyard was built as a royal residence by Prince Elector Ruprecht III (1398–1410). The structure was separated into two parts: a stone ground floor and higher framework floors. The Fountain Hall is located directly across the street from the Ruprecht Building. The courtyard is the scene of open-air musicals, operas, theater plays, and classical concerts performed by the Heidelberg Philharmonics during the Heidelberg Castle Festival in the summer.

Philosophers' Walk is located on the northern side of the Neckar, along the side of which runs the Philosophers' Walk, offering magnificent views of the old town and castle. Philosophers and university lecturers used to walk and converse along the trail. Further up the mountain, the ruined 11th-century Monastery of St. Michael, the smaller Monastery of St. Stephen, a Nazi-era amphitheater, the so-called Pagan's hole, and the ruins of an earthen Celtic hill fort from the 4th century BC may also be found.
