Nuremberg is the second-largest city in the German state of Bavaria, after its capital Munich, and it has a population of 518,370 people (2019), making it the 14th-largest city in Germany. It is the biggest city and the unofficial capital of Franconia, located on the Pegnitz River (from its confluence with the Rednitz in Fürth onwards: Regnitz, a tributary of the River Main) and the Rhine–Main–Danube Canal in the Bavarian administrative area of Middle Franconia. Nuremberg with the neighboring cities of Fürth, Erlangen, and Schwabach constitute a continuous conurbation with a total population of 800,376 (2019), while the wider Nuremberg Metropolitan Region has roughly 3.6 million residents. The city is located around 170 kilometers (110 miles) north of Munich. It is the most populous city in the East Franconian linguistic region.

The University of Erlangen-Nuremberg (Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg) is one of the city's numerous higher education institutions. Having 39,780 students in 2017, it is Bavaria's third-largest university and Germany's 11th-largest, with campuses in Erlangen and Nuremberg, as well as an Erlangen university hospital (Universitätsklinikum Erlangen). The city also houses the Technische Hochschule Nürnberg Georg Simon Ohm and the Hochschule für Musik Nürnberg. Nuremberg Airport (Flughafen Nürnberg "Albrecht Dürer") is the second busiest airport in Bavaria, behind Munich Airport, and Germany's ninth busiest airport.

Staatstheater Nürnberg is one of Bavaria's five state theaters, presenting operas, operettas, musicals, and ballets (primary venue: Nuremberg Opera House), plays (major venue: Schauspielhaus Nürnberg), and concerts (main venue: Meistersingerhalle). The Staatsphilharmonie Nürnberg is Bavaria's second-largest opera orchestra, behind the Bavarian State Opera's Bavarian State Orchestra in Munich. Albrecht Dürer and Johann Pachelbel were both born in Nuremberg. Nuremberg was one of the cities that hosted the 2006 FIFA World Cup.
