Viterbo is the headquarters of the province of Viterbo and an old city and comune in the Lazio region of central Italy. The Italian gold reserves, an important Academy of Fine Arts, the University of Tuscia, and the Italian Army's Aviation Command headquarters and training center are all located in the town. It is situated in a large thermal area that draws visitors from all around central Italy.

Viterbo's old core is one of central Italy's best preserved medieval towns. Many older structures (especially churches) are built on top of ancient ruins, which can be identified by their enormous stones measuring 50 cm on each side. Viterbo is the only city in Italy with a high concentration of 'profferli,' or outdoor staircases, which were common in medieval homes. They are abundant in the San Pellegrino quarter, representing an architectural style that is peculiar to the town and the surrounding region.

The Palazzo dei Papi, or Papal Palace, is a major tourist site in Viterbo. It was the seat of the papacy for nearly two decades in the 13th century, and it also functioned as a country retreat or sanctuary for the papacy during times of crisis in Rome. The palace's columns are spolia from a Roman temple.

The Cathedral of S. Lorenzo was built in the Romanesque style by Lombard architects on the site of an ancient Roman temple of Hercules as the episcopal see of the exempt bishopric of Viterbo. It was renovated from the fifteenth century onwards, and Allied bombers severely destroyed it in 1944. The Gothic belfry, which was built in the first half of the 14th century and displays the influence of Sienese architects, was completed in the first half of the 14th century. The church houses Pope John XXI's sarcophagus as well as Gerolamo da Cremona's painting Christ Blessing (1472).

Three municipal structures surround the major plaza, Piazza del Plebiscito: Palazzo Comunale (town hall; begun 1460), Palazzo del Podestà (magistrate's home; 1264), and Palazzo della Prefettura (police headquarters; restored 1771). The Palazzo Comunale features frescoes by Tarquinio Ligustri, Bartolomeo Cavarozzi, and Ludovico Nucci from the 17th and 18th centuries.

The 11th-century Chiesa del Gesù is a Romanesque-style church. As a form of retaliation for their father's execution, Simon de Montfort's sons, Guy and Simon the Younger, stabbed Henry of Almain, son of Richard, Earl of Cornwall, to death.

Palazzo Farnese: Alessandro Farnese, the future Pope Paul III, and his beautiful[citation needed] sister, Giulia Farnese, grew up in this 14th–15th-century mansion.

Every year, a new Macchina di Santa Rosa, or dedicatory tower, is presented at the Sanctuary of Santa Rosa, which is an austere 19th-century reconstruction.

In Viterbo, there is a Papal Bagno. A series of springs in the Arcione River valley, just west of Viterbo, are known for the medicinal properties of its waters and have been used since Etruscan and Roman times. In fact, the towering remnants of a vast Roman bath can still be seen, and Renaissance artists such as Giuliano da Sangallo, Michelangelo, and Vasari drew them in plan and perspective.
