Setbal is a Portuguese city and municipality. In 2014, the population was 118,166 people living in an area of 230.33 km2. In 2001, the city had a population of 89,303 people. It is part of the metropolitan region of Lisbon.
Shabar was the name of the city during the reign of Al-Andalus. During the nineteenth century, the harbor was known as Saint Ubes in English and Saint-Yves in French.
The municipal holiday is September 15, which commemorates the day in 1860 when King Pedro V of Portugal formally recognized Setbal as a city.
Setbal is located on the northern bank of the Sado River estuary, roughly 48 kilometers south of Lisbon, Portugal's capital. It is also the administrative center of the Setbal District and was previously part of the ancient Estremadura Province.
Setbal was the most significant center of Portugal's fishing industry at the turn of the twentieth century, specialized in the processing and export of sardines. None of the several factories built at the time are still in operation today. However, the existing maritime ports, whether historic, commercial, or modern marines, maintain the city's connections to the ocean and water alive and strong. Tourism, based on the city's magnificent existing natural circumstances as well as outstanding hotels, resorts, and infrastructures, is one of the city's most valued resources, owing to its connectivity with the Sado (river) on one side and the Atlantic Ocean on the other, with a coast line on both.
The city is also linked to the adjacent coast of the Arrábida hills natural park, which offers pristine environment and magnificent beaches on the Atlantic Ocean. The Sado River is home to a dolphin population. Across the river on the south side is the peninsula of Tróia, which has large white/golden sand beaches and has lately seen the construction of numerous luxury hotels and resorts. The Tróia peninsula may be seen across the river from the city. Some of the city's many beaches include Albarquel, Figueirinha, Galápos, Galapinhos, Creiro, and Portinho da Arrábida, which are located on the north side of the river, towards the beginning of the Arrábida hills.
