Formentera is the smallest and most southerly island in the Pityusic Islands group (which includes Ibiza and Formentera, as well as many tiny islands), which is part of the Balearic Islands autonomous community. It has an area of 83.22 square kilometers (including offshore islets) with a population of 10,582 according to the 1 November 2011 Census; the most recent official estimate (as of 1 January 2019) was 12,111.
Attractions
Formentera has been a famous hippie resort since the 1960s. Formentera is well-known across Europe for its many beautiful white beaches and the fact that naked sunbathing is permitted on the majority of its beaches. Patrick Roscoe, a Canadian writer, was born in Formentera. Meanwhile, Joni Mitchell composed her 1971 album Blue on the island, and Bob Dylan once resided at the island's Cap de Barbaria lighthouse. In his book Reasons to Stay Alive, author Matt Haig talks of his frequent visits to the island while he was in his twenties. Formentera Lady, the opening tune on King Crimson's album Islands, is named for the island. On vacation from recording with Apple Records, James Taylor also worked on his popular song Carolina in My Mind, albeit he began composing it in London and finished it on the adjacent island of Ibiza.
Although paved roads provide access to all sections of the island and vehicles can be readily rented in the port, many visitors prefer to rent mopeds or even bicycles owing to the flat nature of the island and the availability of dedicated cycling tracks in several spots.
There are also four Martello towers on the island.
Transport
With no airports, the island was formerly only accessible by boat from Ibiza, making it the calmer of the two islands, although frequent passenger service from the Spanish mainland has increased tourism in recent years.
Ferry tickets from Ibiza may be purchased in advance, as can transportation from Ibiza airport or port directly to Formentera lodgings.
Ferries to Formentera depart from their own terminal in Ibiza port every half hour during high season, using big (200+ passenger) fast catamarans. The voyage takes around 30 minutes, with 10 minutes spent leaving Ibiza, 10 minutes spent crossing the sea, and 10 minutes spent arriving in Formentera across the isthmus to Espalmador.
Some of the anchorages may not be suitable for sailboats under less than perfect conditions.
