It is located in a well-known wine-growing area. The city features a 28-station metro system, making it the world's smallest city with a rapid transport system. The 2020 Winter Youth Olympics were held in Lausanne.

Lausanne is serviced by a comprehensive network of public transportation on a local, national, and international scale. The Swiss Federal Railways' national and international passenger trains depart from Lausanne railway station, which is also the center of the RER Vaud commuter rail system and a stop on the city's metro. Transports publics de la région lausannoise (TL) operates the metro and local buses, with several routes employing trolleybuses. The Lausanne–Echallens–Bercher railway (LEB) operates additional commuter trains from Lausanne-Flon station. The Compagnie Générale de Navigation sur le Lac Léman operates ships that span Lake Geneva (CGN).
With the opening of the m2 Line in October 2008, Lausanne became the first city in Switzerland to have a rubber-tyred metro system. The rolling stock is a scaled-down version of that used on the Paris Métro Line 14. The system will be expanded further, and trams will be reintroduced.
Lausanne is linked to the A1 highway on its west side (Geneva – Zürich axis) and the A9 on its north and east sides (for transit with Italy and France); the interchange between these two motorways is located on the city's north-west outskirts.
Lausanne Airport, which is located in Blécherette, also has a Boeing 737 simulator. The city is also immediately linked to Geneva International Airport by rail, which runs four times an hour and takes 42 minutes.
