Lugano is a town and municipality in the Italian-speaking canton of Ticino in southern Switzerland, bordering Italy.
Between 2004 and 2013, the municipality's area was increased. Lugano has a population of 62,615 people and an urban agglomeration of more than 150,000 people. It is the ninth biggest Swiss town, the largest in Ticino, and the largest with a majority of Italian speakers outside of Italy. The town is located on Lake Lugano, surrounded by the Lugano Prealps Alps. The municipality's eastern boundary is shared with Italy.

In Lugano, there are 17 sites that are part of the Swiss heritage site of national importance. The Inventory of Swiss Heritage Locations includes the municipality of Lugano, the districts of Barbengo, Brè, Gandria, and Biogno, as well as the sites of Cantine di Gandria and Castagnola.
Nationally significant heritage assets include two libraries, the Biblioteca Cantonale and the Biblioteca Salita dei Frati, as well as the Swiss National Recording Archives. The Cathedral of San Lorenzo, the Church of Santa Maria degli Angioli, and the Church of San Rocco were the three churches.
There were three museums: the Museo Cantonale d'Arte, the Museo cantonale di storia naturale di Lugano, and the Villa Ciani complex, which also housed the 'Museo Civico. The cemetery complex on Via Trevano is also among the locations, as is the Radiotelevisione svizzera di lingua italiana Italian-language broadcast facility. The remaining sites are significant homes located around the town. The Palazzo Civico in Piazza della Riforma, the Palazzo e Cinema Corso in Via Pioda, the Palazzo Riva in Via Francesco Soave, the Palazzo Riva in Via Massimiliano Magatti, the Palazzo Riva in Via Pretorio 7 and Villa Favorita in Castagnola are among them.
Natural wonders
Lake Lugano is a famous tourist site in Lugano. The lake has a surface area of 48.7 square kilometers, with 63 percent of it in Switzerland and 37 percent in Italy. It has an average width of around 1 kilometer and a maximum width of approximately 3 kilometers. The lake's greatest depth is 279 meters. The water is typically warm, with average summer water temperatures ranging from 19.5 °C to 24.0 °C.
On the lake, several firms offer tourist boat services. A typical boat trip is to the beautiful lakeside town of Gandria. There are also several shipyards, water taxis, and boat rental locations throughout the lake, as well as hotels and restaurants that provide moorings. Bathing in the lake is permitted at any of the approximately 50 bathing facilities located along the Swiss shoreline.
In addition to the lake, Lugano is surrounded by mountains, which provide a variety of sports and sightseeing possibilities. Two mountains, one on either end of the town's shoreline, provide magnificent views over the town and lake. To the north, Monte Brè is said to be Switzerland's sunniest point, and it also houses the historic hamlet of Brè. To the south, Monte San Salvatore features an ancient chapel and museum atop its peak. Both mountains are accessible through funicular trains, which may be reached via a frequent town bus or by vehicle.
