Fort Lauderdale is named after a chain of forts constructed by the US during the Second Seminole War. The forts were named after Major William Lauderdale (1782–1838), Lieutenant Colonel James Lauderdale's younger brother. The commander of the detachment of troops that erected the first fort was William Lauderdale. The city's development did not begin until 50 years after the forts were abandoned at the end of the war.
Three "Fort Lauderdale" forts were built: the first at the New River's fork, the second at Tarpon Bend on the New River between the present-day Colee Hammock and Rio Vista communities, and the third at the Bahia Mar Marina.
