Milano Centrale, Central Train Station of Milan, is the city of Milan's major train station and the largest railway station in Europe by volume. The station is a terminus at the northern end of Milan's core district. It was officially opened in 1931 to replace the former central station (constructed 1864), which served as a transit station but had a restricted number of tracks and space, making it unable to handle the increasing traffic brought on by the building of the Simplon tunnel in 1906.
Milano Centrale has high-speed links to Turin in the west, Venice via Verona in the east, and Bologna, Rome, Naples, and Salerno on the north-south mainline. Milano Centrale is connected to Bern and Geneva via Domodossola and Zürich via Chiasso in Switzerland via the Simplon and Gotthard railway lines.
Intercity and regional railways connect Milano Centrale to Ventimiglia (French border), Genova, Turin, Domodossola (Valais/Wallis border), Tirano (Grisons border), Bergamo, Verona, Mantova, Bologna, and La Spezia.
The Milan suburban train service, on the other hand, uses the other mainline stations: Porta Garibaldi (northwest), Cadorna (west), and Rogoredo (east).
In a February 1995 interview with Cecilia Bolognesi, Aldo Rossi stated: "They told me that when Frank Lloyd Wright visited Milan for the first time, he was blown away and declared it to be the most beautiful station in the world. It's also more attractive than New York's Grand Central Station in my opinion. There aren't many stations like this one that I'm familiar with ".
Services provided by the station
There are 24 tracks on the station. Every day, over 320,000 passengers use roughly 500 trains to pass by the station, totaling 120 million passengers each year. National and international routes, as well as long-distance and regional lines, serve the station. Bern, Lugano, Geneva, Zürich, Paris, Vienna, Marseille, and Munich are among the daily foreign destinations. The Malpensa Express airport train also connects the station to Milan-Malpensa Airport.
