Aarhus is Denmark's second-largest city and the seat of the Aarhus municipality. It is located in the Kattegat sea on the eastern coast of Jutland, about 187 kilometers (116 miles) northwest of Copenhagen.
Aarhus, the largest city in Jutland, serves as the administrative center for the Central Denmark Region and the statistical region Province East Jutland. The L is Denmark's most populated statistical region, with a population of 903,974 people (as of 1 January 2021). The wider Aarhus region is defined by Aarhus Municipality as itself and 8 surrounding municipalities totaling 952,824 persons (as of 1 January 2021), which is approximately comparable to the municipal and commercial partnership Business Region Aarhus. The city proper, with a projected population of 280,534 persons (as of 2020), is Denmark's second-largest city.
Aarhus is one of Denmark's oldest cities, dating back to at least the late eighth century. It began as a port hamlet at the mouth of the Aarhus River and rapidly grew into a commercial center. The first Christian church was erected here about the year 900, and the village was afterwards fortified with defensive fortifications during the Viking Age. The Viking Age was chaotic and violent, even for Aros, as the town was known at the time, but despite the challenges, the bishopric of Aarhus became gradually stronger and more affluent, establishing numerous religious institutions in the town during the early Middle Ages. Trade continued to flourish, albeit Aarhus was not awarded Market town rights until 1441, and the population of Aarhus remained largely constant until the 19th century. The 1600s were particularly tough for Aarhus, since the town was plagued by many wars and disease, and trade was also stifled by the state in favor of the royal capital of Copenhagen. Nonetheless, Aarhus developed to become Denmark's second largest city at the period, and by the mid-1700s, the formerly booming commerce growth had returned. In the nineteenth century, the industrial revolution became an inflection point, as industry spurred fast population expansion, surpassing regional competition, and the first railway line in Jutland was established here in 1862. Aarhus became the first university in Jutland in 1928, and it is now a university city as well as Jutland's major center for commerce, services, manufacturing, and tourism.
The Globalization and World Cities Research Network has designated Aarhus as a "Sufficiency" global city, and the city's significant cultural institutions include Den Gamle By, ARoS Aarhus Kunstmuseum, Moesgrd Museum, Kvindemuseet, Musikhuset, and Aarhus Theatre. Smilets By (lit. City of Smiles) is the Danish city with the youngest and fastest increasing demographics, and it is home to Aarhus University, Scandinavia's largest university. Commercially, the city is the country's main container port, and important Danish corporations such as Vestas, Arla Foods, Salling Group, and Jysk have their headquarters here.
