Sønderborg is a town in the Danish Region of Southern Denmark. It is the administrative center and the major town of Sønderborg Municipality (Kommune). In a municipality of 74,561 people, the town has a population of 27,702 (1 January 2021). Sønderborg Castle (Sønderborg Slot), the Royal Danish Army's Sergeant School (until 2013), and Sandbjerg Estate are all located in the town of Sønderborg (Sandbjerg Gods). The Sønderborg castle is located in the town center and includes a museum focused on the area's history and culture. The museum is open 365 days a year. Sandbjerg Estate, which had previously belonged to the Dukes of Sønderborg and subsequently to the Reventlow family for many years, was transferred to Aarhus University in 1954. Furthermore, Sønderborg features a castle-like barracks erected in 1906 by the German troops and located centrally by Als Fjord, opposite Alsion.
The historic section of Sønderborg lies on the island of Als, but some of its western suburbs have extended onto Jutland's mainland into what was the interior of the fort of Dybbøl.
