Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is the capital and largest city of Gran Canaria island, which is located in the Canary Islands on the Atlantic Ocean. With a population of 381,223 in 2020, it is the capital, the most populous city in the autonomous community of the Canary Islands, and the ninth-largest city in Spain. It is also Spain's fifth-most populous urban area and (depending on sources) the ninth- or tenth-most populous metropolitan area.
Las Palmas is located in the northeastern part of the island of Gran Canaria, approximately 150 kilometers off the coast of Morocco in the Atlantic Ocean. Las Palmas has a hot desert climate that is moderated by the local cooler Canary Current, resulting in warm temperatures all year. It has an annual average temperature of 21.2 °C. According to a study conducted by Thomas Whitmore, director of climatology research at Syracuse University in the United States, Las Palmas has "the best climate in the world."
The city was founded in 1478 and served as the Canary Islands' de facto capital until the seventeenth century. It houses the Canarian Ministry of Presidency (shared in a four-year term with Santa Cruz de Tenerife), as well as half of the Canarian government's ministries and boards, as well as the Canary Islands' High Court of Justice.
Highways and roads
On workdays and in certain areas, urban road infrastructure is overburdened; the city street plan is not rectilinear and may be confusing even to experienced drivers. There are no toll roads, however, and all entrances, exits, main streets, and important zones are clearly marked.
Las Palmas, as the center of the Las Palmas metropolitan area, serves as the island's motorway network's hub. The city is connected by three highways: the GC-1 to the south, the GC-2 to the west, and the GC-3 to the island's center.
The GC-1 highway connects the capital to Puerto de Mogán in the south. With a speed limit of 120 km/h, it is the quickest route from the top to the bottom of the island and vice versa. It is approximately 75 kilometers long and runs along the eastern and southern coasts of the Canary Islands. It is also the second longest superhighway in the Canary Islands. The road connects the airport to the major cities and resorts, including Maspalomas and Playa del Inglés. The increase in tourism over the years has necessitated the upgrading and widening of the route to accommodate traffic growth. The GC-1 highway begins south of the downtown area of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, runs within the beach of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, and 2 kilometers south intersects with the GC-2 and later runs with a few clover leaf interchanges and later forms a junction with the GC-5 and, further south, the GC-31.
The GC-2 North Highway connects Las Palmas to Agaete, a small northern port and village. The highway begins near the island's beach and runs through the downtown area, connecting with the GC31 at a roundabout interchange. The freeway runs for half of its length within the beaches and coastline of the Atlantic Ocean, but after the unidirectional parclo interchanges around the 20th km, it becomes a highway and runs within the coastline, later having several interchanges and several towns as it passes to the northwest, and finally ending in Agaete.
